The first time draft dodging was introduced was during the Civil War in the 1860's. About 100 years later in the 1960's draft dodging was an everyday thing, men tried to prevent going to fight in Vietnam. Many men would leave the country to Canada or stay in college longer to keep themselves from being sent to Vietnam. Men would sometimes pay other men to stand in for them and send them to the war instead. People in the US did everything they could to get themselves from being sent. Protests included young teens carrying signs during peace walks, young men burning draft cards and the Monterery Pop music festival protesting against the war.
Many artists and song writers began to campaign against the war in their lyrics. Holiday music hid the context of bringing home people from Vietnam, by using non-discouraging words to keep people happy amongst each other.

Here's a video to show what men did to avoid being drafted to the war. Often times men would fake medical symptoms, binge on certain foods to give them certain types of disease and fake mental sickness, by having depression, anxiety, or any other kinds of illnessess, and often times many men would claim to be homosexual and marry each other to avoid going to Vietnam. Giving themseleves injections that were harmful to the body was common, increasing the number of cigarettes they smoked a day would increase the chances of lung cancer to make them uneligable to be drafted. Around 30,000 people had dodged the draft, and their average as was 21. The punshiment for draft dodging was up to five years in federal prison.

"Happy Xmas (War Is Over)"
(Happy Xmas Kyoko
Happy Xmas Julian)
So this is Xmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
And so this is Xmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young
A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Xmas (war is over)
For weak and for strong (if you want it)
For rich and the poor ones (war is over)
The world is so wrong (if you want it)
And so happy Xmas (war is over)
For black and for white (if you want it)
For yellow and red ones (war is over)
Let's stop all the fight (now)
A very Merry Xmas
And a happy New Year
Let's hope it's a good one
Without any fear
And so this is Xmas (war is over)
And what have we done (if you want it)
